I recently got a pie iron that is small enough to add to my camping mess kit! This was incredibly exciting for me — of course this means that I’ve had to try out all of the campfire dessert ideas I can find.
So far, this has been one of my favorite pie iron dessert recipes because it is easy to make, easy to pack, and there are endless variations to try. Give this a try on your next camping trip!

You don’t need much to make great pie iron desserts. All you’ll need is:
- Some sort of dough (pastry, pie, etc.)
- Cooking spray or butter
- Fillings and toppings of your choice
How to make your pie iron dessert:
- Take the pie iron apart and grease both sides using a cooking spray or butter
- Cover one side of the pie iron with dough
- Add your fillings
- Cover the top of the dessert with more dough
- Press the edges of the dough together with your fingers
- Put the pie iron back together and cook it over the fire until both sides are golden
You’ll need to play around to find the sweet spot far enough away from the fire that you won’t burn your dessert but close enough that you can still cook the dough. After a couple of minutes, you can gently open up the pie iron and check how it’s doing. If you are eager like me, try to resist opening it up for as long as you can — if you open the pie iron too early, you might rip the dessert apart.
Some delicious combinations to try:
Chocolate + berry — Oh yes, the classic chocolate and berry combo. This is probably the most obvious combination that I just had to try. The best combination is strawberries with a chocolate hazelnut spread. Dark chocolate pieces with raspberries or cherries is also unreal. If I was making this in my backyard instead of the woods, I would sprinkle icing sugar on top.
Lemon blueberry — This actually might be my favorite pie iron dessert recipe. I used lemon curd and blueberries as the filling and then topped the finished dessert with whipped cream.
Boston cream pie — For this combination, you just need a vanilla pudding cup and some chocolate. I think it is easier to make a “reverse Boston cream pie” by using chocolate pieces as the filling (so they can melt in the fire) and topping the finished dessert with the vanilla pudding. I like to keep the chocolate and the pudding separate, otherwise the flavours mix together.
Any store-bought pie filling — The best pie iron desserts are ones that don’t require a lot of prep or refrigeration. Canned pie filling from the grocery store works great in this recipe.
I hope you’ll enjoy these pie iron recipes on your next adventure. Got any suggestions on new combinations I should try? I’d love to hear all of your campfire dessert ideas in the comments below!
